What is Water trough?
The water trough is equipment which is essential for drinking water for animals or livestock on farms. So, why is water so important in cattle diets? Water intake dictates feed intake. You need to contain at least 80 percent moisture for optimum fermentation. So, if cattle do not consume enough water, they will be forced to eat less feed. In contrast, if they ate more, it would cause the room and become too dry. So, their body recognizes this and prevents itself from taking on more feed. This is why water consumption is so vital to the health and well-being of cattle, and in this way, water needs to be cleaner and fresh so that animals would drink it.
Ensure Cattle Consumes Enough Water
So, how do we ensure that our cattle are consuming enough and water? Well, first of all, it is essential to have clean water available at all times. If the water is too dirty, cattle won’t drink it. For instance, if there is manure or dead varmints in the water, the water will stink, and the animals won't drink it often.
What we realize is that animals would consume more water if the water is cleaner. Remember that the result of reduced water consumption is reduced feed intake and less gain for the cattle.
Young weaned calves often have reduced use of water because they are not familiar with the container that the water is in. So, they may be afraid. Your tank or water trough needs to be more used to feed them water.
For instance, calves that may come from pastures water is from the stream or pond. Often they do not consume readily when it is in concrete or the metal tank.

Building procedure

Leaching can occur in concrete storage tanks. This is because concrete is leaky and made with calcium carbonate. If the water in the trough is acidic, it will leach the calcium from the concrete into the water.
This results in hard water. Another disadvantage of broken pavement is that the pores provide bacteria with a place to grab a foothold and grow. The tank can be sealed to reduce the likelihood of leaching and bacteria growth.
Concrete water troughs are pretty costly to install and remove. Repair of concrete water trough is also costly.
Costs and Durability

Building procedure

Level, the ground around the inflow and overflow pipes, then set the inside rim over top of the tubes.

Use dry concrete and then cover with water to prevent shrinkage away from the rim wall. Keep the water pressure low to avoid washing out the pavement.
After concrete to cure under about 4 inches of water for 2 or 3 days.
If you discover a small leak due to settling or washout, add a couple more bags of concrete.

Timber or Wood Water trough

Building Procedure
This one is reasonably inexpensive but requires a bit of manual labor is as follows:
Step-1: Use a sander to remove all loose fibers and any grease oil on the surface to be water-proofed.
Step-2: Apply a coat of unsaturated polyester resin (isophthalic grade) with a hand brush (identical to a paintbrush) after mixing with an appropriate quantity of cobalt octane (accelerator) and peroxide (catalyst). Any resin supplier will guide you
Step-3: immediately following step-2 lay a layer of fiberglass matt which is available in the market as "chopped strand fiberglass matt (CSM)" all over the coated surface. Simultaneously soak the applied layer with the "iso" resin as explained in step-2. Make sure that there are no entrapped air bubbles in the process of impregnating the CSM over the rough surface. Also ensure that the matt layer is spread on all the surfaces, especially in the corners which are prone to bubble entrapment.
Step-4: Allow this coated trough to cure entirely by either keeping in a hot air oven maintained at 80 C for 6-8 hours or in bright, warm sunlight over a few days.

Price ranges from 150$ - 550$. It’s quite durable.

Water trough location
It's better not to locate your water trough in a shady area because the dominant animal in the herd will keep the younger animals or, the smaller animals from drinking during hot weather. 
You don't want to locate your mineral feeder near the water trough because animals will overeat the mineral and eat more than they need. Your cattle should never have to walk more than 800 feet to get water from any part of the pasture.
